(The Statesman via NewsEdge) The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has ordered all telecom operators to comply with the national numbering plan and stop using prohibited levels for short codes for SMS.
Notices have been issued to 11 telecom companies including BSNL, MTNL, Airtel, Reliance, Tata, Hutch and Idea, asking them to reply within a fortnight.
The telecom regulator has asked cellular operators to strictly comply with instructions issued in November 2004 on the national numbering plan.
The government has asked telecom companies to use the levels except 0, 1, 7, 8, 9 for allocation of short codes to their content providers, including SMS-based services within their network.
It was found that some service providers were using short codes, which were not permissible under the national numbering plan, TRAI said.
Meanwhile, despite the downward trend in the economy the world over, the Indian telecom sector was maintaining its monthly growth rate of well over 3%, making it the highest in the world.
