Traditional voice mail systems are expected to disappear from the market by the end of 2009 as equipment providers continue to embrace unified messaging (UM) technology. An In-Stat report forecasts that UM/UM-capable shipments will rise from 8.4 million seats in 2005 to 11.7 million seats in 2010. UM will also grow beyond traditional voice mail, PC-based email and fax messaging, as wireless PDAs and Blackberry devices enter the picture. The growing popularity of 802.11-based systems in the workplace, at home and in public spaces, as well as the upcoming introduction of dual-mode Wi-Fi/mobile phones will boost the need for compatibility with such devices.
