Telekom Malaysia has entered a partnership with Malaysia's sole electric utility company Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) to expand the availability of fiber-based high speed broadband access in the nation.

The collaboration between the two government-linked companies is aimed at delivering on the government's Nationwide Fiberization Plan (NFP) and driving down the cost to consumers of high-speed internet services.

In a statement, Telekom Malaysia said the collaboration is in line with the government's aspirations of developing the nation's digital economy, as envisioned under both the NFP and the high speed broadband (HSBB) project to deliver nationwide high-speed internet access.

“Further, the roll-out under TM and TNB, as two of Malaysia’s leading institutions, ensures the safety and security of the nation’s strategic and critical infrastructure,” the company said.

“The proposed network will also continue the existing open access participation of industry players to promote private sector competition in retail broadband.”

The two companies have signed an MoU covering the collaboration, but are still finalizing the commercial terms of a definitive agreement.
