Telekom Malaysia (TM) has joined forces with global fiber network operator Hurricane Electric (HE) to provide high-speed broadband services in emerging Asian markets.
Under the agreement, TM will use its ownership in multiple APAC subsea cable systems to help HE meet its Asian expansion ambitions. TM is involved in multiple cable projects, including the new Bay of Bengal Gateway, the Sea-Me-We 5 and the Malaysia-Cambodia-Thailand (MCT) system.
In turn, HE will use its global IPv4 and IPv6 network to help TM expand its global IP reach, and allow the Malaysian operator to continue expanding into services that extend beyond connectivity, such as cloud and media streaming services.
The partnership will also support TM's government-supported high speed broadband phase 2 (HSBB2) and suburban broadband (SUBB) projects to improve internet speeds and connectivity in Malaysia.
“This strategic Agreement between TM and Hurricane Electric harnesses the strengths of both companies, positioning each of them to lead the Asia-Pacific market in emerging technologies,” Telekom Malaysia executive vice president of global and wholesale Rozaimy Rahman said.
“Particularly compelling, TM’s partnership with Hurricane Electric facilitates the successful TM rollout of 100Mbps [fiber] services to the Malaysian consumer and enterprise markets - strengthening TM’s position as a market leader in delivering converged IP based services.”
