Thailand's dtac has launched LTE services in metropolitan Bangkok, using equipment provided by Ericsson.

The operator has contracted Ericsson as the sole supplier for the network's user data management, evolved packet core and circuit core equipment.

The two companies commenced a rollout on the 2100-MHz band in February.

Telenor-owned dtac is providing LTE through subsidiary dtac TriNet. The company aims to improve capacity in Bangkok to help cope with data demand in the densely populated area.

Dtac is Thailand's second largest mobile operator, with around 27.9 million mobile subscribers. Telenor recently committed to investing around $1 billion over the next three years in extending dtac's mobile networks on the 850-MHz, 1800-MHz and 2100-MHz bands.

LTE activity in Thailand is heating up. Thai regulator NBTC this week set reserve prices for the upcoming 1800-MHz and 900-MHz LTE spectrum auctions.
