Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission has approved plans to shut down 2G services on October 31 to allow operators to better focus their resources on 5G.
The regulator has accepted a proposal from Thailand's three major operators – AIS, Dtac and True Move – to shut down 2G services at the end of October, the Bangkok Postreported.
In addition, the NBTC board has agreed with the proposal to launch a media campaign to inform 2G users about the planned switch off.
As part of the process, mobile operators will now be required to submit their plans to terminate their existing 2G services. Importers and suppliers will also be asked to stop bringing in new 2G equipment.
According to the report, there are around 4.9 million remaining 2G customers, with around 2 million subscribing to Dtac, 1.9 million to AIS and the remainder to True Move.
