Australian operator Telstra has won new operating licenses in Singapore and Japan.
The company's international arm, Telstra International, has secured a Facilities Based Operator license from IDA Singapore, giving it the right to own and run telecom infrastructure including voice and data networks.
According to Telstra, the license will also give it the ability to set up the local backbone required to support plans for new subsea cable capacity to Singapore.
Telstra International has also been approved by Japan's communications ministry, MIC, for a Registration Type license, allowing it to own and operate large-scale telecom circuits and facilities in Japan, and to deliver services over this infrastructure.
The company, through joint venture Microland, last month won three licenses to provide fixed-line voice and data services to enterprise customers in India.
Microland has been cleared to provide international and national long-distance phone services and ISP services, and will initially target seven cities, including Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.
Telstra has also selected Mumbai and Chennai to serve as international gateways into its backbone network.
Telstra International targets multinational companies and global service providers in APAC, Europe and the Americas.
