Australia-based managed network services provider Telstra Global has launched a platform for providing cloud infrastructure services from its data centers in Hong Kong, Singapore and the UK.

This extends Telstra's existing infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) delivered from its data centers in Australia.

The IaaS service expansion forms part of an A$800 million ($743 million) investment in cloud computing services announced by Telstra Global in 2011. Each of these three locations has two data centers, with disaster recovery capabilities built in.

Targeted at multi-national customers in Asia-Pacific, Telstra's data centers in Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and the UK will connect Telstra Global's IaaS solutions globally.

Telstra's cloud services comprise virtual servers, dedicated servers, storage and backup, security services, and management console.

Using a unified service management console, IaaS customers can deploy applications, deliver business processes and deploy offshore disaster recovery solutions across multiple geographic locations, said Martijn Blanken, president and managing director, Telstra Global.

This self-service portal helps to integrate the customer's cloud and network environments. According to Nathan Bell, Telstra Global's head of marketing of portfolio and pricing, this enables businesses to easily reconfigure their cloud environments in one go, rather than performing reconfigurations in specific instances and in dedicated portals, which serve different business purposes.

By taking a hybrid approach when managing their hosting environments, Telstra's customers can use a combination of virtual servers, dedicated servers and data center co-location.
