Australia's Telstra has announced the worldwide launch of the SDN platform operated by recently-acquired service provider Pacnet.

Telstra has added more points of presence to the Pacnet Enabled Network (PEN), which is now available across 25 PoPs in eight countries.

"Building on Pacnet’s existing (PoPs) across Asia, we’ve added nine new Telstra PEN PoPs to create the world’s first globally connected on-demand networking platform,” Telstra COO of global enterprise and services Darrin Webb said.

“The addition of NFV capabilities enhances the agility of the service and means customers can order network appliances such as routers and firewalls on demand, making the network less rigid and allowing our customers to respond quicker than ever before to unforeseen network resource requirements.”

The PEN is now available in markets including Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, the US and the UK. Telstra is offering additional connectivity options into public cloud services for hybrid cloud deployments.

Telstra completed the acquisition of Pacnet last week, after announcing plans for the acquisition in December.

Pacnet first launched its PEN in Hong Kong in late 2013, applying a pay-as-you-go model to network capacity.
