Telstra said its chief financial officer and board member John Stanhope will retire at the end of the year after spending for more than 40 years with the Australian incumbent carrier.

Stanhope joined Telstra in 1967 and has held a number of operational roles and senior financial management positions including director of finance. He will also retire as a director of the Telstra board on 30 December.

Chief executive officer David Thodey said Stanhope had been a “driving force” in the privatization of Telstra and the recent conclusion of definitive agreements with the NBN Co and the Australian Federal Government.

“We look forward to him continuing to play a critical role as we seek shareholder approval for Telstra’s participation in the National Broadband Network, “ Thodey said in a statement.

Telstra has commenced a process to find Stanhope’s replacement, Thodey added.
