The Indonesian government has granted Wimax licenses to incumbent mobile players Telkom, Indosat and six other companies.

The eight carriers fulfilled the main criteria for winning a license, including sufficient infrastructure and using at least 30%-40% local products, the Jakarta Postsaid. Indonesia's telecom minister aims to help establish a domestic Wimax infrastructure industry.

The other winners were Internux, First Media, Jasnita Telekomindo, Berca Hardayaperkasa, Rahajasa Media Internet and a consortium of Comtronics Systems and Adiwarta Perdania.

The winners were chosen from a pool of 73 applicants. Only two operating licenses for each of 15 designated Wimax zones were awarded.

First Media reportedly made the highest bid - 121.2 billion rupiah ($12.4 million).
