A company rolling out towers for Telenor Myanmar's mobile network, Irrawaddy Green Towers (IGT), has contracted Cummins Power Generation to help keep the sites running.

IGT has been selected by Telenor to build and operate towers for the Myanmar network. Under the deal, IGT will roll out over 750 sites over the next 12 months.

Cummins will in turn provide solar hybrid, battery hybrid and diesel generator power systems for the towers.

Cummins director of telecom business Alan Zhao said the company is already a major supplier to Ooredoo, the other international operator rolling out a nationwide mobile network in Myanmar.

He said the company has “designed a hybrid product specifically for the telecom industry to provide the best value to our customers.”

Telenor plans to launch mobile services in Myanmar this month. Ooredoo has taken a slight head-start, having launched services in August and attracting its first million customers within weeks.

Myanmar state-owned operator MPT meanwhile recently teamed up with Japan's KDDI on fixed and mobile service delivery and commenced a project to modernize its network infrastructure as it prepares for the increased competition.
