Telekom Malaysia has signed two new major broadband deals with the government covering the deployment of more broadband infrastructure.

The company disclosed it has entered public-private partnership agreements with the Malaysian government covering the implementation of the second phase of the national High Speed Broadband (HSBB) network project and the Suburban Broadband Project (SUBB).

As part of the 10-year HSBB 2 project the operator will deploy additional access and core capacity covering state capitals and cerain major towns.

Telekom Malaysia's project covers planning, design, implementation, operation and maintenance work.

In addition, Telekom Malaysia will conduct the SUBB project, another 10-year network project involving upgrading existing copper lines to deliver speeds of up to 20Mbps - and up to 100Mbps in FTTH areas - to over 42,000 premises in suburban areas by 2019.

Telekom Malaysia will invest 1.3 billion ringgit ($303.2 million) in the HSBB 2 project, which will be augmented by a 500 million ringgit investment from the government.

For the SUBB project, Telekom Malaysia will contribute 1 billion ringgit with the government investing 600 million ringgit.

Telekom Malaysia was selected as the government's partner for the HSBB project without a tender in 2008.

“We are honored to have been given the opportunity to prove ourselves as the government’s trusted partner in national development time and again,” commented Telekom Malaysia group CEO Tan Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa.

“The successful rollout of the first HSBB project has elevated the nation to emerge as the highest in terms of number of high speed broadband subscribers in South East Asia and one of the most acknowledged fast track project rollouts globally.”
