Telecom New Zealand will switch off its CDMA network in mid-2012.
The New Zealand incumbent also announced it will close its CDMA-based WorldMode Roaming service on October 28, while its 1xEV-DO data service will be scrapped from November 30.
The company will not say how many customers it has on the network, but head of network operations, Gemma Roper, said many CDMA customers had already migrated to the W-CDMA/HSPA XT Network, which launched in May 2009.
She said only a “relatively low number” of WorldMode customers had used their device overseas recently.
WorldMode customers can use their handsets as normal in New Zealand until the CDMA network closes in mid-2012, however devices will no longer work in most overseas destinations.
EV-DO customers will be able to access data services on the CDMA network until mid-2012 but only at 2G speeds.
Voice and text services will be offered to CDMA customers until mid-2012.
Australia’s Telstra shut down its CDMA network in April 2008, using the 800MHz spectrum for its 3G Next G service.
