Qualcomm names president as Steve Mollenkopf becomes CEO
Qualcomm has promoted its licensing chief Derek Aberle to president of the company reporting to CEO Steve Mollenkopf.
In his new role, Aberle will oversee the company’s business units and global expansion. He has been at Qualcomm for 13 years and led the company’s licensing business.
Under his leadership, Qualcomm Technology Licensing has more than doubled its revenues and profits, completed key license agreement extensions, successfully defended challenges to our business model and established Qualcomm’s 4G licensing program, said CEO Mollenkopf.
Prior to his current role, Aberle held several roles with Qualcomm’s Technology Licensing division, including EVP & president and SVP & general manager. He joined Qualcomm in 2000 after representing the company as outside counsel for several years at large, international law firms.
Last week, Mollenkopf officially took over for Paul Jacobs, who moved to become executive chairman.
Mollenkopf was reportedly poached by Microsoft as a replacement for Steve Ballmer, but Qualcomm quickly named him as the successor to Jacobs on December 13.
