Telecom Career: HKBN appoints CIO

Hong Kong Broadband Network (HKBN) has named Eric Ho Chan Fai as the company's CIO.

Ho will be responsible for the development of HKBN’s information technology strategy, and lead the IT department to optimize business support and processes via IT system development, integration and management.

He has over 25 years of IT experience in local and overseas markets, which spanned across various industries including telecoms, banking, property, publishing, entertainment and retailing.

Prior to joining HKBN, Ho was head of IT and service platform of SmarTone Mobile Communications. He also held senior IT positions in Huawei Software Technology, Emperor International Holding, Westpac, CSL and Bank of America.

Pacnet names John Garrett MD of Southeast Asia

Pacnet has appointed John Garrett as MD of Southeast Asia to lead sales in Singapore and the region. He will also retain responsibility for strategic capacity and IRU sales and will continue to be based in Singapore.

With over 20 years of industry experience, Garrett was most recently VP of product strategy and management for carrier products at Pacnet. He first joined Pacnet (formerly Asia Netcom) in 2003 and was Country Manager of Pacnet Japan when he left in 2008.

Prior to re-joining Pacnet in 2010, Garrett was global head of sales at Pacific Crossing, overseeing a sales team that sold more than 600Gbps of Trans-Pacific capacity during the 18 months he was with Pacific Crossing. He has also held sales management positions with MCI, EDS and JP Morgan.

MEF appoints Verizon’s Ihab Tarazi as chairman

Ihab Tarazi, Verizon’s VP of global network planning, has joined Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) as chairman. He will help MEF expand its goal of addressing areas such as operations and planning and their impact on Carrier Ethernet technology.

Nan Chen continues to serve as president; Robert Kuse, Cox Communications’ director of commercial engineering, as treasurer; Arie Goldberg, Omnitron Systems’ CEO and co-founder, as secretary, and Kevin Vachon as COO.

The other board of directors are: Lionel Florit (senior manager, Cisco Systems); Andrew McFadzen (head of global marketing, Orange Business Services); Scott Mansfield (principal engineer, Ericsson); Eric Puetz (director of strategic Standards, AT&T); Raghu Ranganathan, (senior advisor (Office of CTO) Ciena); Ralph Santitoro, (director of Carrier Ethernet market development, Fujitsu Network Communications); Karen Schmidt, (executive director, product management and strategy, Comcast Business Services).
