5G has an uplink dilemma. Two-way interactive services require higher uplink speeds, requiring overhauling the backhaul bandwidth - an expensive proposition.
“5G-based services will require a relatively higher uplink bandwidth than 4G LTE offers, where the downlink speed mostly matters for the user experience,” said Lee Su-Kil, senior vice president, KT Corp’s network research technology support unit.
So, the South Korean operator decided to take a different tact: integrating the 5G access network with its ubiquitous fixed broadband optical network.
“We believe that this approach will give us a competitive edge over other operators in terms of the quality of the user experience,” said Lee. It is also the key reason why it was named Best 5G Technology Trailblazer.
