A consortium of mostly Asian operators has plans to roll out a new subsea cable system around the Pacific Rim by the end of 2015.

Korea Telecom, Chunghwa Telecom, China Telecom, China Mobile and three other operators intend to deploy the New Cross Pacific (NCP) cable system, the Korea Timesreported.

The NCP cable will link Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan and the US, and be designed to interconnect with other systems in the region.

The report doesn't name the other partners involved, but mentions that the consortium members are from the US and Japan as well as Korea, China and Taiwan.

KT has announced plans to reveal more details of the cable project early next year. The South Korean operator has been focusing on expanding its overseas operations in the face of increasing saturation at home.

Earlier this month, the company confirmed it is in early stage talks over acquiring a 35% stake in Tunisian state-owned mobile operator Tunisie Telecom.
