The consortium operating the Southeast Asia Japan (SJC) subsea cable has contracted TE SubCom to perform its third network upgrade of the system.

Under the agreement, TE SubCom will supply its 100Gbps coherent transmission technology to increase the capacity of the cable by 6.3Tbps.

The upgrade is aimed at ensuring the cable has the capacity to help meet rising demand for communications connectivity in the APAC region. It is projected to be complete by the end of June.

The 8,986km SJC system links Japan, mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Brunei.

It is operated by a consortium consisting of China Mobile International, China Telecom and China Telecom Global, Chunghwa Telecom subsidiary Donghwa Telecom, Globe Telecom, KDDI, Singtel, PT Telkom's Telin, TOT, Brunei International Gateway and Google.

“We are pleased to bring value to the SJC members by delivering state of the art technology, at competitive pricing with 100% on-time delivery,” TE SubCom president Aaron Stucki said.

TE SubCom is the undersea communications technology supplier subsidiary of TE Connectivity.
