(Indian Express via NewsEdge) Tata Sky Ltd., an 80:20 joint venture between Tata and Star, has launched the Tata Sky Satellite Television service, which covers 300 cities in India.

Tata Sky will provide its service for a one-time fee of 4,000 rupees ($86.07), which will go towards procuring hardware as well as activation charges, followed by a monthly subscription charge of 200 rupees ($4.30).

The joint venture is gearing up to face challenges from existing players, including Essel Group's Dish TV and Prasar Bharati's free-to-air DTH offering DD Direct Plus, which currently cater to 1.25 million and 2 million subscribers, respectively.

Tata Sky will initially offer 55 channels, with the number to go up later.
