Tata adds VoLTE capabilities to IPX network

Tata Comunications has upgraded its global network to allow it to offer VoLTE connectivity to its IPX-connected service provider customers.

The company has added HD voice support to its network, and also deployed capabilities to automatically detect when a call is in HD and route it in such a way as to retain the core benefits of the technology outside of the operator's network.

In particular, the network now uses codec-aware routing to detect HD calls and route them according to codec-specific rules and logic.

“Adding VoLTE to the portfolio... provides mobile operators with a potential competitive advantage over OTT providers, who may not be able to match the quality of experience. This is especially true as video calling over LTE will be the natural evolution of VoLTE,” Tata Comm SVP of strategy and development for global voice services Christian Michaud said.

The new service comes one year after Tata Comm launched a global managed LTE roaming service using its IPX Connect platform.

Infonetics last year projected that there would be 12 commercial VoLTE networks and 8 million VoLTE subscribers worldwide by the end of the year.
