Taiwan Star Cellular has become the nation's fourth mobile operator to launch 4G services, with a free 31-day trial ahead of the network's commercial debut.

The operator will offer limitless data usage during the month-long period to any customers registering for the trial, The China Post said. Users will also be offered 10 minute free calling.

As of the trial launch, the network covers 21 major counties and cities, and 70% of Taiwan's highways. The network covers around 80% of the population, and the operator aims to increase this to 95% by the end of the year.

Besides its 4G rollout, Taiwan Star is also investing in bolstering its 3G infrastructure, and plans to increase its number of base stations in operation by 30%, the report states.

Taiwan Star was one of the bidders in last year's $4 billion 4G spectrum auction. Three other winners - Chunghwa Telecom, Far EasTone and Taiwan Mobile - all launched LTE services within days of each other in June.

The other two spectrum winners were Hon Hai affiliate Ambit Microsystems and Asia Pacific Telecom.
