The Taiwanese government will conduct a second-round 4G auction in the third quarter of 2015, putting 190 MHz on the block.

Regulator NCC expects to raise between TW$15-30 billion ($490 million-$983 million) from the auction of 50 MHz of TD-LTE spectrum and 140 MHz for FDD LTE, Want China Timesreported. Six operators are expected to take part in the bidding.

NCC chair Shih Shih-hao said he expects that by 2020 demand for 4G spectrum will reach 1,000 MHz. The NCC plans to release more than 2,000MHz in both 2015 and 2016 to satisfy the needs of 4G operators and prepare for the 5G era.

He urged public agencies such as the police and transportation departments to make more efficient use of the spectrum reserved for them, to free more up for use by mobile operators.

Each of Taiwan's mobile operators are expected to take part in the auction and bidding is expected to be competitive.

During last year's debut 4G auction, operators bid a combined $4 billion for 270 MHz of spectrum.

The NCC is making more moves to meet operators' demand for spectrum – the regulator recently assigned the 5700-MHz to 6400-MHz block for use in operators' small cell networks.
