Singapore's StarHub has entered an agreement with Nokia to co-develop an Internet of Things ecosystem and launch innovative commercial services in the nation.

The two companies plan to develop new IoT use cases and applications covering connected living, connected vehicles and connected buildings, with the aim of launching commercial services in the first quarter of next year.

Under the agreement, Nokia will support StarHub and its partners in the development of use cases such as for smart parking, environmental sensors and video analytics. The vendor's Bell Labs R&D unit will also provide consultancy services to both StarHub and its enterprise customers.

"A large component of Singapore's Smart Nation initiative involves the deployment of IoT devices in the environment, including in the home, along streets and in parks, and in offices. The granular data derived from these sensors will allow enterprise customers to understand and gain insights from their customers, improving operational efficiencies and aid in long-term planning,” commented Dr Chong Yoke Sin, chief of StarHub's enterprise business group.

“We will leverage Nokia's IoT technology to help address urban challenges faced by our government and commercial customers. We also look forward to building viable business models on this nascent technology."
