Singapore’s StarHub said it has started deploying software-defined networking (SDN) technology to its existing core and access networks with the help from partners including Cisco and Huawei.

StarHub aims to enhance its network operational capabilities by transforming existing networks into open, cloud-based environment, thus enabling the company to better respond to its corporate customers’ business needs as well as to support Singapore’s Smart Nation initiatives.

“Our enterprise business has been growing steadily in the past few years, and is expected to become our second largest revenue contributor in the near future,” said StarHub CTO Mock Pak Lum.

“To accelerate our growth, among other things we need to enhance the efficiency of our network with SDN, to improve our ability to deliver bandwidth dynamically and rapidly offer customizable solutions to our corporate customers, helping them realize productivity, flexibility and innovation benefits.”

The move came as StarHub recently finalized the design of its SDN environment and identified various strategic partners, including Cisco and Huawei who will be involved in the development of StarHub’s SDN ecosystem.

Cisco will help StarHub in designing and testing StarHub’s SDN architecture, while Huawei will help build a multi-vendor SDN network, the operator said in a statement released Tuesday.

StarHub aims to complete SDN transformation for its core and access networks in two years.
