ST Engineering's Electronics division is involved in a project to deploy multi purpose smart street lighting in Hong Kong as a proof of concept trial.

The company has installed customized multi-purpose lamp posts based on its Smart Street Lighting solution in Kowloon East for the trial.

The lamp posts will interconnect with a telecoms network to form an IoT backbone, and IoT sensors fixed onto the lamp posts will be used to enable real-time collection of city data.

Data to be collected includes weather, air quality, temperature, people and/or vehicle flow related information for city management and the support of smart city initiatives.

The smart street lighting network will also provide services such as Wi-Fi hotspots, electric vehicle charging facilities, and information dashboard for maps and directions, real-time traffic updates, and car space vacancy information.

As part of the trial, which commenced in June and will run until December next year, one of the sites will be powered by renewable energy.

“This program goes beyond installing lamp posts for smart lighting services. It leverages technology to transform lamp posts into smart infrastructure that will enable smart services to be delivered to the residents in Hong Kong,” ST Engineering president of electronics Ravinder Singh said.

“Having successfully deployed 15 million sensors globally for street lighting, water and energy management, we are excited by this opportunity to extend our technology and expertise to Hong Kong in its smart city journey.”
