SpeedCast to provide satellite capacity in PNG

Satellite operator SpeedCast International has signed a deal with O3b Networks to provide capacity for Papua New Guinea.

SpeedCast will use its medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite constellation to fulfil the contract, using a new IP trunk from Port Moresby to the international internet backbone.

The company's MEO configuration offers a sub-150ms latency and its international network has redundancy built in at all layers, the company said.

The agreement follows SpeedCast's acquisition of Papua New Guinea based operator Oceanic Broadband Services in 2014. The purchase included teleport facilities in Port Moresby.

“This new investment shows our commitment to the PNG market,” SpeedCast CEO Pierre-Jean Beylier said.

“We are pleased to extend our value proposition in partnership with O3b, to enable our wholesale customers to deliver the highest combination of bandwidth, speed, low latency and availability at a more accessible price for an even wider range of end-users.”

O3b is already providing similar satellite services to a number of Pacific nations.
