Softbank Mobile named Asia's best carrier

Japanese wireless operator Softbank Mobile and Malaysian group Axiata were the biggest winners at the 13th Telecom Asia Awards in Singapore last night.


Softbank Mobile, a division of internet, media and telecom giant Softbank Group, won the trophy of Best Asian Telecom Carrier, winning praise from judges for having “changed the rules” in the Japanese mobile market.

Axiata’s CEO Jamaludin Ibrahim was voted Telecom CEO of the Year for his performance at the helm of the company, which also claimed Best Regional Mobile Group for its operations in multiple Asian markets.

The judges’ citation hailed Ibrahim for “successfully taking the company public and achieving outstanding financial performance in difficult market conditions.”

Celcom Axiata, Axiata’s Malaysian mobile subsidiary, took out the prize for Best Mobile Carrier.

Executives from region were presented with their trophies in a ceremony at the Capella Resort, Singapore, last night.

Apple Corp. won the Disruptive Technology Award for the iPhone, which the judges said had created “an entirely new ecosystem and marketplace.”

Hong Kong-based HGC was voted Best International Wholesale Carrier and BT Asia-Pacific Best Managed Services Provider.

Indian carrier Tata DOCOMO won the Best Emerging Markets category, PCCW took out the honors for Best Content Strategy hand and SK Telecom claimed the Best Converged Services prize.

Joseph Waring, Group Editor of Telecom Asia, said the awards emphasized successful innovation.
