Hong Kong carrier SmarTone has upgraded its 3G network to support HSDPA, becoming the first mobile operator in Hong Kong to introduce such an upgrade. The operator said its HSDPA network card will enable users to access the Internet at transmission speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps, or five times faster than the standard speeds offered by W-CDMA 3G wireless technology.

According to SmarTone, the transmission speed will increase to 14.4Mbps between 2007 and 2008.

The company said it will rollout HSDPA-enabled mobile phones early in 2007.

The operator also said it plans to provide unlimited Internet access to users, which it said is less costly than similar services provided in other countries.
