"TiniWiki" is just that - a version of the Wikipedia small enough to fit on a phone.

A team of Australian researchers has been able to compress the 60GB English version of Wikipedia into just 4GB, enabling users to access the content offline.

Raymond Wong, acting CEO of TiniWiki, said it now was available on the iPhone and would be ready for Windows Mobile 6.5 in October.

But he says compressed Wikipedia is just an example of the core technology, which provides a framework in which databases or large documents could be downloaded onto a small device and used offline.

It's being trialed by the New South Wales Education Department, where teachers are able to send out assignments and supporting materials directly to students' devices.
