Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) is deploying a nationwide Wi-Fi network using indoor and outdoor access points provided by Ruckus Wireless.

The operator is conducting the rollout to bolster its ADSL service offerings with a nationwide network of Wi-Fi hotspots. The company will offer access to the Wi-Fi network to both existing postpaid ADSL customers as well as prepaid casual customers.

SLT plans to centrally manage the network of access points using a Ruckus gateway and Alepo's OSS/BSS software infrastructure to create a carrier-class Wi-Fi network.

“SLT’s carrier-grade WiFi network provides a host of direct, targeted marketing opportunities for shop owners, companies and big brands within these environments,” SLT group CEO Dileepa Wijesundera said.

“With our extensive country-wide fiber optic network, we’re able to provide the end-to-end infrastructure required, delivering carrier-grade WiFi to business locations as well as crowd-sourcing public places.”

The operator worked with Ruckus and Aleopo on interoperability testing earlier this year ahead of the commercial deployment.

Ruckus Wireless managing director for India and SAARC Sudarshan Boosupalli said the deployment demonstrates the ways operators can take advantage of seamless Wi-Fi upload with existing fixed and wireless infrastructure, as well as the monetization possibilities Wi-Fi can offer.
