SK Telecom will work with Ericsson and Sony Mobile to trial the use of IoT wearables over LTE networks.
The trials will involve testing new device and network innovations for wearables that have consumer lifestyle and wellness applications.
The devices will have multiple sensors providing accelerometer, identification, pulse meter and GPS functionality.
SK Telecom, Ericsson and Sony Mobile recently completed lab testing of key LTE device Category 0 and Category M functionalities. This this will be followed by field trials in South Korea over SK Telecom's live LTE network.
LTE Cat-0 and LTE Cat-M are standards specifically designed for low-complexity and low-cost LTE connectivity, making them suited for wearables and other IoT devices.
"We are working with Ericsson and Sony Mobile to trial both mobile network technologies and new IoT devices that improve our customer's lives, at home and work,” SK Telecom senior vice president and head of network R&D Park Jin-hyo commented.
“These latest tests and trials reflect our commitment to establish a stronger IoT ecosystem globally.”
Ericsson recently announced new networking software designed to accelerate IoT adoption by taking advantage of the extensive footprint and ecosystem support of LTE and GSM networks.
