SK Telecom says it has developed a new technology that promises to improve 5G data traffic processing tenfold compared to existing LTE networks.

The new technology enables packet switching equipment to process high-volume traffic and blazing fast speeds in 5G networks.

In existing LTE networks the maximum speed for packet switching per server is 20Gbps. This can be approved to 200Gbps on the same server with the new technology.

SK Telecom said that by adding virtual servers the technology can even break the terabit barrier, making this the world's first implementation of terabit-per-second capability for packet switching

The operator plans to propose the technology to the 3GPP and ETSI's NFV industry specification group as a candidate for a global standard, and plans to use the technology to expedite its own planned 5G rollout.

“Ultra-fast packet processing technology is essential in delivering best quality of 5G services,” SK Telecom SVP and head of network technology R&D Park Jin-hyo said.

“It is a significant result for SK Telecom as this virtualization-based high performing equipment could enable us to deliver a faster, efficient 5G rollout.”
