SK Telecom has today launched a pilot fish farm management system based on Internet of Things sensor technologies.

The company is developing a system envisioned at helping improve the farm management process with the use of wireless sensor networks to enable farmers to remotely monitor their fish tanks in real time.

Eel farming requires careful monitoring of fish tanks, as even minor changes to factors including water temperature and pH levels can be fatal to eels.

The system being trialed will be able to take real-time measurements of water temperature, quality and oxygen levels and send them to a network based on near-field communications technology.

The information will then be transported over LTE networks to SK Telecom's open IoT platform Mobius and then to a fish tank management server for analysis. Users will be able to check the fish tank status through smartphones.

SK Telecom said it aims to commercialize the IoT-based fish farm management system in the first half of the next year, and data from the trial will be used to help expand the project to different species of fish.

The project is being partly funded by the Korean government under a public-private partnership arrangement.
