SK Telecom and Nokia have completed a test involving the transmission of data using the newly finalized standalone 5G standard, just five days after the standard was approved by the 3GPP.

The trial involved end-to-end-end 5G only data transmission as well as ultra-low latency data processing, and was conducted at the Nokia Lab in Poland.

At the trial site, the companies verified the feasibility of various 5G standalone application services such as virtual reality, ultra high definition video, autonomous vehicles and smart factory solutions.

SK Telecom has been developing both non-standalone and standalone 5G technologies, with plans to use the non-standalone standard during the early stages of 5G commercialization to overcome the initially limited coverage of 5G networks, while gradually expanding the use of standalone 5G.

“By successfully verifying technologies aligned with the global 5G standard, we have gained a powerful driving force to lead our way into the global 5G commercialization,” SK Telecom EVP of ICT R&D Center Park Jin-hyo said.

“SK Telecom will speed up our comprehensive efforts towards 5G commercialization, such as the release of 5G mobile phones and network deployment.”

Huawei recently announced it had completed initial verification testing for a series of technologies expected to be included in the 3GPP Release 16 5G Phase 2 standard.
