SK Telecom has conducted a demonstration of 225Mbps LTE-Advanced, ahead of the anticipated commercial launch of the service next year.

The company demonstrated the planned service to journalists yesterday. SK Telecom achieved the speeds by using carrier aggregation to combine 30 MHz of spectrum in the 1.8-GHz and 800-MHz bands.

Once smartphone chipsets that support 225Mbps speeds have been developed, SK Telecom plans to launch the upgraded LTE-A service nationwide for smartphones. This means an anticipated launch date of 2H14.

SK Telecom became the first operator to launch commercial LTE-A services back in June, achieving peak speeds of 150Mbps by aggregating 10 MHz of 1.8-GHz spectrum and 10 MHz of 800-MHz.

The operator teased the 225Mbps upgrade in September. But SK Telecom added it is already looking towards the next evolution of LTE-A - the aggregation of three spectrum bands to support up to 300Mbps of speed.
