SK Telecom has announced it has successfully verified interoperability between multi-vendor 5G equipment based on interfaces it has developed in collaboration with the industry.

At the SK Telecom 5G test bed in Bandung, the company successfully tested interoperability between a 5G non-standalone core developed by Samsung and 5G base stations from Nokia and Ericsson.

The operator selected the three vendors as its preferred bidders for 5G equipment in September.

SK Telecom has meanwhile been working since last year with partners including AT&T and Orange at 3GPP and the Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance to develop interfaces for interworking between multi-vendor 5G equipment.

SK Telecom and Samsung specifically developed the 5G non-standalone core for the trial. The successful verification means that SK Telecom can install Nokia and Ericsson base stations within the coverage of Samsung's 5G core.

“SK Telecom continues to lead the industry in 5G by successfully achieving multi-vendor equipment interoperability based on 3GPP standard,” SK Telecom EVP and had of ICT R&D Park Jin-hyo said.

“We will continue to make efforts to launch commercial 5G network that offers the highest quality and stability.”
