Weeks before Myanmar is due to decide on the allocation of two new mobile licenses, a consortium led by SingTel has publicly laid out its proposal, revealing it is offering international connectivity assistance to sweeten the pot.

The consortium has pledged to build a mobile network covering 95% of the country within 36 months if it wins one of the licenses.

The group - which also consists of Myanmar conglomerate KBZ Group and Myamar Telephone Co - said its coverage and pricing commitments far exceed the minimum requirements for the tender.

SingTel has also committed to “lend its assistance in the launch of a Myanmar national satellite” and promote the inclusion of Myanmar in the planning efforts for the upcoming SEA-ME-WE 5 subsea cable.

“We want to bring more than just a domestic telecom infrastructure. We will bring international connectivity,” SingTel CEO International Mark Chong said.

The Myanmar government has shortlisted 12 consortia for inclusion in the tender for the two mobile licenses, and plans to announce a winner towards the end of the month.

China Mobile and Vodafone had teamed up to submit a joint application, but withdrew from the running just short of the June 3 deadline for submitting a final bid.
