Singapore’s three wireless carriers have said the country’s older train tunnels will have 3G network support by July.

The IDA had previously only said that SingTel, Starhub and M1 were ‘working towards’ the date.

While Singapore’s newer train lines are 3G equipped, the country’s older lines such as the North-South and East-West lines are limited to 2G.

The country’s minister for information, communications and the arts, Lui Tuck Yew, revealed in parliament that the IDA had fined certain operators for not keeping to schedule for the 3G network rollout in some tunnels, but did not disclose further details.

A Starhub spokesperson told TelecomAsia that the 3G rollout in Singapore’s older train tunnels is a shared initiative between the three carriers, with incumbent SingTel leading the project.

A SingTel spokesman declined to reveal who the 3G equipment providers were, but confirmed that the rollout was on track to be completed in July.

Figures from the IDA pegged the number of post-paid 3G subscriptions in Singapore at around 3.5 million end February.
