Singapore and Brunei are set to lower mobile roaming charges between the two countries so mobile subscribers traveling to either country could enjoy more affordable roaming rates.

According to regulatory authorities in both countries (Singapore’s Infocomm Development Authority and the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam ), mobile operators in both countries have agreed to cut roaming fees by up to 10% for voice calls and 50% for text messages, video calls and data.

The reduction of the mobile roaming rates, which marks another milestone for ASEAN, will take effect from January 1, 2015.

This is the first of its kind in the region to include data roaming. This agreement will help address the changing mobile needs of its people, promote greater communication linkages between Brunei and Singapore, and enhance the already strong bilateral ties, IDA and AITI said in a statement released today.

The ASEAN had committed to work closer together to lower mobile roaming rates at the 17th Asean Telecommunications Regulators' Council (ATRC) in 2011.
