Construction of China's first urban public Wi-Fi network began in Shanghai's Jiading district last month, sina.com reports.

The project, which will build out up to 300 Wi-Fi base stations in a mesh configuration, will be operated by state-owned data communications provider ChinaComm. The Jiading new city project is a priority project under the current five-year plan.

US-based Strix Systems, Cisco and Shanghai's GBCom will supply the equipment. Besides Shanghai, governments in Beijing, Wuhan, Hangzhou and Shenzhen have already committed to public Wi-Fi networks.
