The nationwide launch of CMMB mobile TV has been postponed until after the Olympics because of a delay in its satellite launch.

The satellite, originally scheduled for to be placed into orbit in June, has been held up for reasons not disclosed, sohu.com reported, citing industry sources.

Officials from the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) had previously said CMMB service would be available in 324 cities around the nation by the time of the Olympics in August.

Because of the delay, it will be carried by the terrestrial network in just eight cities to Olympics viewers. Jiang Wenbo, president of the SARFT's Academy of Broadcast Planning, told a CMMB summit last month that by August CMMB would offer UHF service in six Olympic cities, plus Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

SARFT is about to call a tender for a terrestrial buildout in 35 major cities.
