An iPhone 5s exploded in Shenzhen recently, according to a report by Chinese-language South Metropolis Daily published in the Guangdong Province of China.

A person who identifies himself as Mr Yu said the iPhone 5 he bought in Hong Kong last Thursday blew up after having been turned on for 10 minutes in his Shenzhen office on the same day, the report says.

“The phone was a bit hotter than normal after it was switched on,” he was quoted as saying. “I heard a blast from my phone [about 10 minutes after]—the smoke rising out of it set off the smoke alarm [in my office].”

The phone battery was burnt beyond recognition while the screen and the shell were damaged (pictured), according to the report.

Yu sent a photo of his damaged iPhone 5s to Apple’s office in Shanghai, the report notes. AppleCare in the mainland city said it’ll forward the photo of the phone to the firm’s US headquarters for a follow-up on Monday [Dec 16, 2013], the report adds.

This wasn’t the first time an Apple mobile device was reported to blow up. Last month, an iPad Air exploded in an Australian Vodafone store, prompting a store evacuation.
