India's Reliance Jio Infocomm has applied to government agencies to conduct a network security test ahead of the launch of its pan-India 4G services.
The operator has asked the Department of Telecom to start tests of the legal interception and monitoring solution that it must apply as a condition of offering services, Press Trust of Indiareported.
Such a test is a prerequisite to the launch of 4G services. Reliance Jio aims to launch services in an initial 5,000 cities and towns spanning most of India's 22 telecom circles by March 2015.
The Indian government recently introduced rules requiring mobile service providers to allow law enforcement agencies to track mobile communications in real-time, citing national security concerns.
Reliance Jio was the only operator to acquire pan-India 4G spectrum during the $8 billion BWA auction in 2010.
The operator has since signed infrastructure sharing deals with a number of major players, including Indus Towers, Reliance Communications and Bharti Airtel's infrastructure arm Bharti Infratel.
In January, the company confirmed it plans to offer voice as well as data services over its network.
