(Bangkok Post via NewsEdge) Thailand's National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has rejected a request by True to provide 3G services in the country via one of its subsidiaries.
The request was rejected because the new True subsidiary, Samut Prakan Media, had no network of its own with which to provide such a service, and had not confirmed details of a proposed leased network.
NTC Commissioner Sudharm Yoonaidharma said the Type 3 license was reserved for operators with their own networks.
The NTC had rejected Samut Prakan's request and asked it to come up with details of a network, which it claimed would be leased from other operators to run the 3G services.
He said the company had only stated that it would operate the service via a virtual private network.
He said that if the company came up with the required details, the NTC would need to go through its regulations again to establish if it could grant a Type 3 license under such circumstances.
True vice-chairman Athueck Asvanont said he 'did not understand' the reason for the NTC's decision.
Currently, True Move is providing mobile-phone services on an 1800-MHz spectrum, he said, adding that it planned to upgrade the network in line with its commitments to CAT Telecom.
