Qualcomm yesterday introduced a new chipset family for mainstream smartphones, with speeds of up to 1 GHz, and said it was sampling industry first multi-mode 3G/LTE chipset.
The first devices based on the new MSM7x30 family should launch commercially by the end of 2010, Qualcomm said. The family will consist of two chips, one for HSPA+ networks, and one that supports multi-mode HSPA+/EV-DO Rev. B and SV-DO.
The MSM7x30 family use the same Scorpion CPU used in the Smapdragon QSD8x50 chipset.
The chips will support a number of mobile platforms, including Android, Windows Mobile, Brew Mobile Platform and Symbian OS.
The new chips will allow the telecom industry to continue to narrow the difference between handsets and laptops.
Qualcomm said the multi-mode 3G/LTE chipset was now with vendors Huawei, LG and ZTE.
Devices based on this chip, as well as the first solution to support dual-carrier HSPA+, are expected to reach the market in Q2 2010.
