Most Innovative Vendor of the Year, Green Vendor of the Year: Nokia Siemens Networks

Paul Tyler, Nokia Siemens Networks' head of the Asia-Pacific region, discusses the main trends it is capitalizing on to drive growth.

Look no further than Japan. Anyone who experienced this year's summer in Tokyo suffered from a lack of air conditioning and walking down stairways as escalators stood still. Business had to deal with power shortages after the disaster in March. This was a wake-up scream to get greener, now - it is high time to reduce our energy footprint.

In mature markets energy costs can make up 10% of operator opex, rising to as much as 30% in emerging markets. To help our customers reduce energy cost and dependence, we optimize all angles of on-grid energy use and provide off-grid energy through windmills and solar power for more remote areas. This energy optimization allows operators in emerging markets to cut their power generator runtime by up to 90%, thus reducing their consumption from 20,000 to 2,000 liters of fuel per year.

How does Liquid Net enable mobile operators to handle rapidly changing coverage demands?

Capacity in networks is mostly frozen in separate places across radio, core and transport, often idle from 25% to 80% in radio and 30% to 50% in the core. Liquid Net melts capacity frozen in place so it can flow to where user demands are momentarily peaking: the result is a superior customer experience in real time.

Liquid Net uses two principles. The first is self-aware, self-adapting networks. Using built-in intelligence and real-time monitoring capabilities, the network recognizes where demand is coming from and instantly readjusts itself to deliver the necessary capacity to match that demand. This second is software-defined applications on multi-purpose hardware - Liquid Net software runs on legacy and leading-edge processors, enabling the use of multi-purpose, shared hardware. Processing capacity is pooled and flows to where it's needed most.

Liquid Net is made up of solution sets that we call Liquid Radio, Liquid Core and Liquid Transport. Just on its own, Liquid Radio can unfreeze up to 80% of idle baseband capacity, providing up to a 65% capacity gain.
