Philippine carrier PLDT has increased the capacity of its backbone fiber network via an upgrade to 100G.
The operator has also upgraded its Domestic Fiber Optic Network (DFON) with Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching solutions.
The carrier said the upgrade will allow it to deliver next-generation services to customers such as fiber-to-the-home, fiber-to-the-building, LTE/4G, IPTV and triple-play services.
With this regional and long-haul domestic network upgrade, PLDT said it will become the first network operator in the Philippines to deploy 100G, which will also allow the operator to extract more capacity out of existing fiber network.
PLDT has partnered with US firm Ciena for the upgrade. The carrier said it will also be the first network operator in the Philippines to deploy Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform with WaveLogic coherent optical technology, integrated ROADM and OTN switching.
This upgrade of PLDT's DFON network, part of the company's two-year network modernization program launched in 2011, is expected to be ready for commercial services before the end of the year.
