Hong Kong telco PCCW has teamed up with the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) to turn the operator’s Wi-Fi hot spots into “virtual tourist information centers”.

Tourists are now able to access the HKTB web site for free via any of PCCW’s 7,000+ Wi-Fi hot spots without a login page, PCCW announced Tuesday. They’ll also be able to download apps such as interactive travel guides from the site to smartphones.

However, visitors who want full Internet access will need to register with PCCW, either via a free 60-min PCCW Wi-Fi pass available at HKTB visitor centers and selected trade shows, or by purchasing an account at convenience stores and PCCW storefronts, or online.

Registered users will also be able to access a new location-based map service that displays nearby restaurants and shops accredited under HKTB’s Quality Tourism Services Scheme, as well as tourist spots and other PCCW hot spots.
