(Business World via NewsEdge) A legal tussle is expected once the partnership agreement between Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) and US-based EchoStar Communications Corp. is sealed.

PLDT is negotiating a partnership with Echostar, a direct-to-home satellite television provider.

Under the Philippine Constitution, any media company, including a cable provider operating in the country, should be 100% Filipino-owned. There are about 700 local cable companies to date.

But PLDT spokesperson Ramon Isberto said: "Whatever final arrangement we have with Echostar, it will be in compliance with legal and constitutional requirements. The deal is not yet finalized, but we are aware of this consideration."
